May 17 - World Telecommunication and Information Society Day

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated annually on 17 May. This day marks the founding of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on May 17, 1865, when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris.

The theme for the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2022 is “Digital technologies for older people and healthy aging”. “Equitable access to digital technologies is not only a moral responsibility. It is essential for global prosperity and sustainable development,” says Houlin Zhao, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunication Union, in his annual message.

The common goal of ICT organizations is to make technology equitable, safe and accessible for people of all ages, to help older people in the digital world become active participants in the information society.

Today, RUE Beltelecom offers a wide range of services, including access to the Internet, television, etc. In addition, the company has created the largest round-the-clock telephone center in the republic, whose specialists help users get a detailed advice on services, technical issues, and even, if necessary, call the master to their homes. A call to 123 is free of charge from both fixed and mobile phones.

The specialists of RUE Beltelecom have created a website aimed at increasing digital literacy and highlighting cybersecurity issues for people of all ages. And one of the tasks of the YASNAe TV channel, founded by RUE Beltelecom, was to introduce viewers, including the elderly, to the world of innovation, telecommunications and high technologies. An important educational function is solved by the programs “In the Public Domain” and “Time of High Technologies” Since 2020, several seasons have aired, and viewer interest to these projects is increasing every year.
